I think there’s some sort of magic that takes place when you become a part of the military lifestyle: suddenly you become acutely aware of every single patriotic item in stores. I can’t eat M&M’s, but you can bet I notice when the 4th of July bags make their appearance on shelves. I may not need it, but I definitely check out all the patriotic paper at the craft store. With that kind of eye for the red, white and blue, it’s easy to understand why I’m a huge fan of patriotic care packages.
There’s really no shortage of ideas for patriotic care packages, probably because care packages and the military go hand-in-hand. Whether you’re into fun puns or sentimental sayings, there’s truly a design to brighten every service member’s day.
Look for a design that speaks to you and your service member; even something as standard as a red, white and blue box can be customized for your loved one.

Decorating patriotic care packages
One of the best parts of patriotic care packages is that the theme is pretty much done for you. Over the years, I’ve put together quite a few care packages with patriotic themes. They all have a few things in common: a red, white and blue color scheme, stars and stripes imagery and a few fireworks.
This one is a play on the National Anthem lyric and is simple, but exceptionally cute! Choosing a more subtle background paper lets the text really pop. You could customize this design even further by adding photos of the brave individual in your life.
In addition to referring to the anthem, this patriotic care package also hints at the US flag with the stars and stripes. You could do any variation of this design with just a few items from the store: red and white striped paper, blue paper, silver letters and silver star stickers.
I really liked working on this design because it had such a unique and fun spin to it: the “cause baby you’re a firework!” lyrics aren’t necessarily meant to be patriotic, but they fit a 4th of July theme perfectly. The theme was carried out a bit more with the addition of the sparkly fireworks. Since you can’t actually include true fireworks in your patriotic care packages, these cut outs are a solid substitute.
When and where to shop for supplies
Craft stores are an excellent source of supplies for your patriotic care packages. Most of them actually have pre-printed patriotic paper or stickers all year long so you can stock up whenever there is a sale. Some larger stores make stock these items seasonally so definitely keep an eye on shelves beginning shortly after Easter.
You can also take all the work out of decorating your patriotic care packages by purchasing one of my pre-decorated care package flap sets. This year’s 4th of July design just debuted in my shop and it’s the perfect combination of patriotism and sweet sentiment.
