A few deployments ago, I made a pretty significant discovery: small flat rate boxes. I was in search of a way to send just a few small items to my husband in between my large care packages. While at the post office, I found the small flat rate box and just like that, the entire care package world changed for me. I immediately realized what an excellent addition these mini boxes were to a deployment care package plan.
5 reasons you should send mini care packages
They’re cheaper to send and fill.
Sending a smaller box is a great way to save money on care packages! They cost less to ship, but their smaller size also means you’ll have to buy fewer items to fill them. I can usually fill and send a small flat rate box for under $20 which saves a significant amount of money compared to large (or even medium) flat rate boxes.
They’re easier to decorate.
Sometimes the prospect of decorating a large flat rate box can be a bit overwhelming, especially when you’re trying to squeeze it in during deployment. But when you’re decorating a smaller box, you save time and money on supplies.
They cut down on waste.
When you send your loved one fewer items, they are more likely to consume/use them all! Odds are, you aren’t the only one sending your loved one care packages; they may have more snacks and toiletries than they can consume. Of course, they may share the extra with co-workers, but there may not be room to store everything!
Sending a smaller box forces you to be more intentional and selective about what you’re sending. This ensures that you send just items your loved one will enjoy and use, cutting down on waste.
They take up less space.
Space is normally tight in rooms and quarters overseas so sending care packages with that in mind is important. Sending boxes and boxes of snacks, toiletries and other items is great, but they have to go somewhere! Smaller boxes hold fewer items and therefore, your loved one doesn’t have to find a spot to store as many things.
They fill time between larger care packages.
Small flat rate boxes are a great option to fill time between larger care packages, especially during the holiday season. For example, our wedding anniversary falls right in the middle of the fall, with Halloween and Thanksgiving as bookends. To send another giant box is too much, so a small flat rate is perfect to still recognize the occasion. You could easily send a small flat rate box between Christmas and Valentine’s Day.
Small flat rate boxes are great options for deployment care packages: helping you to save time and money. Next time you’re getting ready to send your loved one a care package, consider sending a mini one!
