The weather is starting to cool and the days are beginning to get shorter. That can mean only one thing: fall is on its way! With the sweaters, boots and scarves come the need to plan your fall care package. Fall care packages tend to be a bit underrated and overlooked in favor of more commercial holidays, but I think that’s a mistake. A fall care package is the perfect way to send the comforts of home to your loved one, no matter where they are. After all, what’s more comforting than warm blankets, crisp air and a little bit of comfort food?
When it comes to decorating a fall care package, you may find yourself a little short on inspiration, especially compared to the other holidays around this time of the year. Luckily, there are a few must-have items that, if you incorporate them, will make decorating your fall care package easy!
Four Must-Haves For Your Fall Care Package
Colorful leaves and fall go hand-in-hand so it makes perfect sense to include them as part of your fall care package decor. While using real leaves may be tempting, I wouldn’t suggest it. They will likely dry out to the point of crumbling during shipping and could actually bring bugs with them into your box. My suggestion is to use fake leaves, either paper, fabric or a combination of both!
There are quite a few paper options out there that feature fall leaves as part of the pattern. That’s the easiest way to add leaves to your care package, but don’t discount printing fall leaf clipart out on colored paper and then cutting them out. That’s what I did for this fall care package I sent to my husband. You can also usually find fall leaf stickers at craft stores.
Any care package without a pun is a wasted opportunity in my opinion, so of course I think adding one here is a good idea! My fall are package design uses a pun (“I can’t be-leaf that I’m still falling for you”) and I love the added fun it provides.
Other puns you could use include:
- I can’t be-leaf how much I love you
- Pumpkin spice and everything nice
- You’re un-beleaf-able
- I’ve fallen for you
- Orange you happy it’s fall
- To my sweet potato, I yam so thankful for you
- I’m so thankful to have you
- Gobble gobble!
- Time to gobble til you wobble!
Those last few are perfect for a Thanksgiving care package, but you could certainly combine the two themes!
Maybe it’s the chunky knit sweaters or the super soft blankets that make their first appearance in the fall, but to me, fall is all about different textures. For that reason, I like incorporating textures into a fall care package. You could do that by using fabric leaves or textured paper on the flaps (or by wrapping the contents of your box). Texture can also be accomplished by adding something 3-dimensional to your flaps. The fabric leaves I use in my fall care package design offer a fabric texture and give the decorated flaps some extra dimension.
Natural, but vibrant, colors
Fall is full of colors: reds, oranges, yellows. Using them in your care package (in as many different shades as you’d like) really drives the fall theme home. Natural backgrounds (like a soft beige or a burlap) are the perfect stage for your fall colors to shine! I also like adding a touch of gold to a fall care package because it complements the reds, oranges and yellows rather than competing with them.
A fall care package can be so fun to decorate, especially as you play with all the wonderful colors of the season. I can’t wait to see your designs!
