What’s the best compliment you’ve ever received?
I honestly don’t know what got me thinking about this, but for the past few days I have been mulling it over almost constantly, trying to pull out the one compliment that has stuck with me the most. I’ve finally come to the conclusion that I can’t pick between two, which I suppose is a pretty good problem to have!
Before I tell you what they are, I have to explain how I picked them. There are two type of compliments: the ones made in passing about more superficial things and the ones that dig a little deeper and are more permanent.
Sure, hearing that you have on cute shoes may make you smile and make your day brighter, but will you remember that moment a year from now? Maybe, maybe not. But if someone takes the time to compliment your character, if they hit on the very thing that makes you unique, doesn’t that mean more to you? It does to me.
You see, I firmly believe that the the mark of a great compliment is that it isn’t just a one time thing. It should stick with you, offer inspiration when needed and maybe even push you to be better.
When I was 22, an unthinkable tragedy happened in my family and we were forced to deal with a new reality almost over night. It’s a period of time that I don’t always remember exactly (and honestly, I’m not sure I want to), but it was the source of one of the greatest compliments I’ve ever received.
My dad told me that my actions during that week reminded him of a Winnie the Pooh quote:
You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.
To have my dad, the person who I’m pretty sure may still be Superman, say that to me was almost beyond words. It was something I needed to hear at that moment and a compliment I have drawn upon multiple times since to deal with difficult situations.
The second greatest compliment I’ve ever received was when A asked me to be his wife.
I know, that sounds cheesy, but think about it for one second. Here’s a person telling me that he wants to spend the rest of his life with me. Just me. That no matter what happens in the future, he wants me beside him. That he wants me to be the mother of his children. That I am the best person in the world for him. And that he wants to tell the entire world that, every single day for the rest of his life.
When you look at a proposal like that, it’s a huge compliment! And once again, it’s got the making of a great compliment. I’m constantly working to be a better wife and improve our marriage because I know just how much weight came with that question.
Alright, now it’s your turn. What’s the best compliment you’ve ever received and why was it so powerful?
