Book Review: The Fever

Hello all! I’m back with another update on my 15 in 2015 reading list. I hadn’t planned on sharing another book so soon, but I absolutely flew through The Fever by Megan Abbott! It was so good that I couldn’t put it down and finished it in less than a week, which is quite an accomplishment for me these days!

I won’t go into too many plot details here so as to not spoil anything for future readers, but the story centers on a small town, specifically the Nash family, as they try to unravel the mystery of a scary disease racing through teenage girls.

Overall opinion: I really liked this one! It had a fast-paced plot and engaging characters.  The mystery aspect of “what’s wrong with the girls?” was enough to keep me turning pages long after my bedtime.

What I liked: Honestly, I liked almost all of it! I think the author did a great job capturing the panic that comes along with a medical emergency/public health crisis.  I also enjoyed some of the teenage girl angst that continued on despite the surrounding circumstances; it was definitely relatable as someone who’d been there.

What I disliked: I’m not sure I loved the ending.  I won’t spoil it for anyone, but it’s not at all what I expected and I wasn’t hugely satisfied with it.

Favorite part: I don’t think I could pick just one!

My recommendation: If you’re looking for a quick, entertaining read for the beach or plane, this is for you!
